One of my favourite things from back home in Canada is Hy’s Seasoning Salt but Lawrys is delicious as well, and when cooking, I end up using 30% less salt using a mixed seasoning instead.

Vegeta (Hungarian Seasoning Salt) goes in all our meat dishes, and is also 30% less salt substituted with dried herds and ground up vegetables, but it is a chicken stock based product and I often concern myself with the not so healthy ingredients when trying to omit salt from our diet.

Many of these types of products have GMO fillers, and MSG. And I question where they get the chicken stock powder from and how they actually make it. I imagine them scrapping the floor of a butchers, sticking it in a pot and boiling it. I mean, does anyone actually know?? Your guess is as good as mine.

Homemade Seasoning Salt

1/2 Cup Sea Salt

4 Tbsp Paprika (smoked even better but could’t find any)

2 Tbsp Chili Powder

2 Tbsp Garlic Powder (0r 1 Tbsp onion power and 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder)

1 Tbsp Pepper

1/2 Tbsp White Pepper

1 Tbsp Organic Sugar

1 Tbsp Mustard Powder (I used Curry powder but Turmeric would be nice as well)

Put into a jar and shake… voila, healthy seasoning salt from my family to yours!

  1. Thanks for this. I use Hy’s seasoning salt all the time & so does my tenant so we got through a container of it quickly. I have smoked paprika I got courtesy of my fave coffee shop and will use it!

  2. Hy’s recipe hack:
    1 1/2 tsp white pepper
1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper to make it spicy!
    1 tbsp ground cumin
    1 tbsp ground coriander
    1 tbsp paprika
    3/4 tsp salt
    3/4 tsp pepper
    3/4 tsp oregano
    3/4 tsp basil
    3/4 tsp thyme

  3. Thank you so much for this recipe. I live in Canada and love Hy’s but I can’t always find the MSG free one, and the price is going up all the time. Your recipe costs a fraction of the real thing and tasts so good!
