Welcome to My Expat Life

Experiences like these are to learn who we are deep down. If we never test our boundaries, then we don’t know what we are capable of doing. If we reach our deaths safely without a scar, to maybe live a few extra years is not worth skidding into our graves screaming, ‘Wow, that was cool!”

Welcome to My Expat Life – That’s Hamori! a family blog created to document our move from Canada to France, and from France to Hungary. It became a place for me to collect information gathered along the way, to process the stress while changing our life entirely while searching for happiness, and to share our experiences with fellow expats and wanderlusts. Over the years it has grown.

HAVE YOU EVER DREAMED ABOUT LIVING IN EUROPE? HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW PEOPLE DO IT?

Those wishing to make changes in their lives, and go after their dreams, may find some inspiration in our blog. As wanderlusts like ourselves, those visiting Europe, may find and read our stories about our travel destinations pretty, and tips on the best places we have found over the years of travelling with our children.

We checked out of the rat race in 2011, left behind the 9-5:00 in search of a life that we could get really excited about. One that includes lots of time with the kids, and showing them the world through travel.

To navigate through our website headers,

Our Journey: Is the chronological account of our journey through weekly journal entries. We talk about how we sold everything, packed up the kids and moved to Europe. We wanted to buy a B&B in South France, and show the kids another kind of life, one based on time currency. We learned new languages and lived a far more balanced life! Follow along as our family adventure unfolds, and now takes us to the land of paprika, Hungary!

France: New to France, here we share our experiences with culture, language, food, business, local sites etc… For those of you who are thinking about travelling with children, we might have a few tips. For those wishing to move to southern France, we might have some very good advice on renting, buying and even renovating a home. Pursuit your happiness, reach for your dreams, and I promise life just keeps getting better.

subheader Capestang: Capestang is the little village nestled up to the Canal du Midi that we decided to call our home for five years. Southern France is beautiful, with the sun shining 300+ days a year. We are located 2 hours from the Spanish border, 20 minutes from the beach and also close to Beziers, and Carcassonne airports. Other near-by cities include Montpellier and Toulouse. For us it is the perfect place to set up a life, and work in the tourist industry.

My Expat Life Series: Meeting fellow expats who find their best lives in the Languedoc has inspired me to write a series. Creative, interesting and thought provoking, I hope you enjoy reading about the people who move to the region and what they do for a living, as much as I enjoy writing about them. I hope they inspire you to live your best life too.

Food: Do you love food? Gluttony is my favourite sin! I find myself eating my way through Europe, and recreating the recipes and sharing them with you! Do I love you? Well have I cooked for you? Food is my love language…

Lists: Writing for years, it must be a natural process to make lists when accumulating so much information along the way. Here they are in all there organized glory.

Inspiration: This is where I babble about my silly epiphanies, the problems I have worked through, my random thoughts and my aha moments. I share them to show that if I can follow my dreams and pursue happiness then anyone can. I am an ordinary gal, from a rough neighbourhood who decided to change the course of her life. I hope my story brings inspiration to you.

subheader 40 Before 40: Before the monumental 40th birthday was approaching, I decided to make a list of the forty things I wanted to do before my milestone occurred. It was fun, and I think I learned a lot in that year. Will there be a fifty before fifty? Wait and see!

Hungary: Our lovely home in Budapest Hungary is the complete polar opposite to our rural life in Capestang. Metropolitan Elizabethtown in the 7th district in Pest is teaming with life, operas, theatre, nightlife, shows, festivals, music, restaurants, history, monuments and it never ends. Here I share my other love, our other home; Magyarország. After five years in France, we are now moving to Budapest Hungary! Follow our story as the Hamori family moves to Budapest Hungary!
